Sport and Sport+ modes were ideal for the occasional on-ramp acceleration or necessary sudden overtake, they also allowed the turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 to clear its throat and sing. Any performance difference of the Type S compared to its competitors are virtually unnoticed in the real world, unless a M340i X-Drive pulled up beside us. With the sportier modes engaged, the Type S became hugely entertaining. Even though the TLX Type S uses the same fly-by-wire braking technology as the NSX, we found the pedal feel to still be engaging, regardless of the driving mode we found ourselves in. ![]() It may not be Rolls-Royce-comfortable, but we never got tired or sore after long drives. In the two placid modes, we always felt connected to the road while the ride was relaxed, the TLX Type S maintained its composure without sacrificing comfort or road feel. Of the various driving modes, most of our time was spent in Comfort and Normal, where the noticeable difference between the two is mainly the weight of the steering feel. Mated to the Type S Turbo V6 is a 10-speed automatic transmission which, says Honda, has been developed and strengthened to handle the power and torque increase of the new engine. “The associates at the Anna Engine Plant put a lot of pride into producing this very special Type S Turbo V6 engine,” commented Tim Pohlman, Type S Turbo V6 manufacturing project leader. During this process, the powertrain development team in Japan worked closely with the Anna Engine Plant. ![]() Through a combination of lessons learned when producing these engines, the new Type S engine benefits from a host of technology advancements and changes. “I remember how excited I was, along with the rest of the Acura engine development team, when it was decided to start developing this high-performance, environmentally responsible engine that we had proposed with our North American associates.”Ī research and development team with members from both the USA and Japan was assembled, consisting of experienced Honda powertrain engineers, some of whom had previously worked on the Civic Type R engine and the NSX powertrain. “While I was in Ohio, I was involved in the strategy development phase of this Type S Turbo V6 engine,” explained Matsuda. ![]()
